It is with great sadness that I let you all know that
Joe Chmielewski passed on Friday, October 2, at Foote. Joe's friendship, his enthusiasm for RC and his valuable contributions to the club will be sorely missed. Mike Roxberry

December Newsletter 2009

!!!   IMPORTANT NOTICE   !!!

Every member’s attendance at the December Club meeting is important, as we will be holding our Elections for Officers and Club Leadership. The BOD has developed a slate of members who have indicated an interest and willingness to serve the club as an officer or board member. That being said, the meeting is open to all nominations from the floor. If you are interested in serving in a club leadership role, please throw your hat into the ring for consideration by the membership. However I do ask that before nominating a member for a leadership position, check with them to make sure they are interested in being considered. In that way we can conduct our elections without wasted time and in an orderly fashion. In any event, come to the meeting and cast your vote.

Club Meetings

Every member is encouraged to attend and participate in monthly club meetings. Meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month and are currently held at the Jackson High School Cafeteria. Visitors are welcomed.

We are going to try to move away from holding just business meetings and make the meetings more interesting to the membership. Although a portion of each meeting will deal with the business of the club, bring in your Show and Tell, and hobby demonstrations. We continue to look for members who might be willing to put on 10-15 minute demonstrations of hobby skills or group activities for the club. If you have a particular interest or skill that you would be willing to share with other members, let a board member know. Bring your new projects into the meeting to show us what you’re up to during the winter building season. There is lots of hobby expertise in our club that we should be sharing with each other. Let’s share the wealth of knowledge in our club and promote the hobby with others.

HELP WANTED

Still Needed:

  • Club News Coordinator
  • Club Historian
  • New Pilot Trainers
  • Coordinators for 2010 Club events such as Fun Fly’s, Electric Fun Fly’s?, Warbird Contest?, Combat Event?, Club Picnic,
  • Concessions Coordinator or Club Coordinator for IMAC Contest

REMINDER

Club dues are due at the January club meeting. Club bylaws require each member provide documentation of current AMA membership before receiving a club membership card. Regular membership dues are $60.00, of which $50.00 goes towards yearly membership dues and the other $10.00 towards tickets for the raffle, which you may keep or sell. Junior (under 17) and Senior (over age 75) memberships are also now available under the new dues structure passed for 2010. Early payment helps your Board of Directors in budget planning activities for the year. Remember that according to the new Club bylaws, members who have not paid their dues by March 1 will be dropped from membership.

WEBSITE UPDATE

Dave Gray and Tania Evans continue development of our Club website. The “members only” section is up and running on the site so that members can access information for club members only. This section will be used for meeting minutes, budget issues, treasurer’s reports and other items that we do not want viewed by the general public. The picture section has also been updated. Don’t forget that we also have a classified ad section for selling your used hobby items.

Field Maintenance and Mowing

The BOD is again soliciting bids for 2010 mowing, grading and other contracted field maintenance. Jerry Scott remains the chairperson of the Field Maintenance Committee. If you are interested or know of someone interested in submitting a bid, contact Jerry Scott for bidding process specifications.

President’s Year End Note

This year has brought its share of challenges, successes, joys and sorrows for the club. We have seen some growth in our club membership while also losing some great friends and colleagues. As we head into 2010, the Jackson RC Club is solid financially and I think we can look forward to a good year ahead. I want to thank the 2009 officers and board members for all of their hard work throughout the year. The club would not have been as successful without their dedication. We all owe them our gratitude. I wish you all wonderful Holidays and a very happy and prosperous New Year.   Mike Roxberry

March News
WELCOME to http://jacksonrc.com/

Welcome to the new Jackson RC Club website designed and developed by Dave Gray and Tania Evans. Please make a note of it and add it to your favorite web sites, as you will want to visit the site often for club news and updates. Also take a moment and give Dave Gray your thanks for providing the leadership and expertise to put together a great web site for the club.

HELP WANTED

Do you have the time and/or a special talent that you would be willing to share with the club?  If you have an interest in any of the following, give Mike R or any board member a shout.

  • Club News Coordinator
  • Club Photographer
  • Club Historian
  • Coordinators for Club events such as Fun Fly’s, Electric Fun Fly’s?, Warbird Contest?, Combat Event?, Club Picnic,
  • Concessions Coordinator or Club Coordinator for IMAC Contest
  • Membership Secretary

We are still looking for members willing to put on 10-15 minute demonstrations of hobby skills or group activities for the club. Share your particular interest or skill with other members at a club meeting. Let Mike Roxberry or a board member know you’re interested and we’ll get it scheduled. At the February club meeting, Mike Sotomayor brought in his vacuum bagging system to demonstrate how he skins foam wings with balsa. Thanks Mike!

Field Maintenance and Mowing

The BOD continues to solicit sealed bids for this year’s mowing, grading and other contracted field maintenance. The BOD received only one bid that was opened at its Feb. 16th Board meeting. The bid was not acceptable to the board and it was agreed to continue open bidding until it’s April 20th meeting. Jerry Scott is the chairperson of the Field Maintenance Committee. If you are interested, contact Jerry Scott for information about the specifications and the bidding process. If no acceptable bids are received, the board will have to explore other alternatives.

Fuel Purchase

Don’t forget that fuel orders are to be taken at the March 11th club meeting. Dave Curtis will be taking orders and payment so plan to stock up on your glow fuel for the year at bargain prices.

Jackson Crossing Mall Show March 13-15, 2009

The clubs Mall Show at Jackson Crossing will be held on March 13-15. Phil Titus is the coordinator of this event and needs help with set-up and manning the booth throughout the weekend. Plan to sign up for a shift at the March 11th club meeting. Don’t forget to bring you display models in on Friday afternoon and evening for set-up. It is also helpful if you can provide a 4X6 display card to show the name of the aircraft, the owner, and a little about the airplane. Let’s make sure we support Phil and the club in this valuable outreach effort.

Show and Tell

Bring your new, old, or rebuild models in to the club meetings for show and tell. If we can get a club photographer enlisted, we’ll be posting pictures on the web site each month of the show and tell models.

Tips of the Month

If you have trouble seating blind nuts on the inside of firewalls or any difficult to reach areas, you can make a handy and inexpensive tool out of a 10-12-inch long piece of ¼-inch dowel. Just epoxy a flat-head screw that is the same size as the blind nut to the end of the dowel. You can the seat the blind nut by threading it on the screw and using the dowel to push the blind nut into hole.

When using wheel collars to mount your wheels onto gear wire, make sure you file a flat spot on the wire where the collar set screw will be. The flat area will give the setscrew better contact

and help prevent the wheel from coming off. Also use a little blue thread-lock on the setscrew. To remove a stubborn setscrew that was secured with thread-lock, heat it with a soldering tip as the heat will break the adhesive seal.

NEXT CLUB MEETING:  The next club meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Location is to be announced and will be posted on the web site.

February News

Fuel orders

Fuel orders will be taken by Dave Curtis at the March meeting.  Just about any aircraft fuel will be available for ordering.  All fuel must be paid for when ordered and will be delivered at the April meeting.  Now is the time to stock up for the coming season.  You absolutely can not buy fuel at the hobby shop or by mail order this inexpensively.  Be sure to write down all the oil types and percentages, nitro percentages, etc... and bring your list to the March 11th meeting.

Luck of the draw

We will have a 50/50 drawing at every meeting.  And in addition to this, we will be having a 'luck of the draw' drawing.  Every month, $10.00 will be put into the drawing.  If your name is drawn and you're present at the meeting, YOU WIN THE MONEY!!!!  However, IF YOU'RE NOT PRESENT, YOU LOSE!!!  All you have to do to be eligible to win is have your 09 membership paid before the monthly drawing.  If you renew your membership before the meeting begins and before the drawing takes place, your automatically entered in the drawing.  If you're not present and you're name is drawn, the money goes back into the pot and another $10.00 is added the following month.

Renew your AMA and your JRCC memberships, and come join the fun and see your friends. Please remember, you MUST have your 2009 AMA membership paid before you can renew your membership in the Jackson club.  This is due to AMA insurance requirements

January News

Website Update

Dave Gray is hard at work developing an updated website for the club. We are hoping to implement a “members only” section on the site that members can access using a user name and password. This section would be used for meeting minutes, budget issues, treasurer’s reports and other items that we do not want the general public to have access. We are also looking at changing our domain name to one that would allow better access by the general public to our club website. Keep tuned for more updates as planning and development continues.

Field Maintenance and Mowing

The BOD is in the process of soliciting sealed bids for this years mowing, grading and other contracted field maintenance. Jerry Scott is the chairperson of the Field Maintenance Committee and the BOD is planning to open the bids at its Feb. 16th Board meeting. If you are interested or know of someone interested, contact Jerry Scott of the specifications for the bidding process.

Soldering Advisory

Many of you use soldering guns for soldering chores as the may be considered safer since they won’t roll off the workbench with less chance to burn you. However, you should be aware that soldering guns have a very strong alternating current magnetic field around the tip. If bought into close proximity to electric motors, servos and the like, this magnetic field can de-gauss (de magnetize) the magnets inside the motors and servos causing permanent damage. Use particular care when soldering clevises, pushrods, etc. inside the airplane radio compartment to stay far away from electric motors and servos.

Tip of the Month

Removing or separating parts that have been glued using epoxy can be a chore. Carefully applying heat from your heat gun may help you to pry them apart.

JRCC is a local Radio Control Club located in mid-Michigan.  We get only 7 months of the year to fly and we make every day count.

Our field is located in beautiful Jackson, Michigan in the backwoods of the old city landfill on reclaimed Pete Dillon Field. Yes, that’s right! So no houses or people to complain about the noise of our roaring machines.

Focus 2009

The new Board is looking for ways to enhance the membership meetings with raffle drawings, 50/50 raffles, Show and Tell, and hobby demonstrations. Would you be willing to put on 10-15 minute demonstrations of hobby skills or group activities for the club? If you have a particular interest or skill that you would be willing to share with other members, let a board member know. Bring your new projects into the meeting to show us what you’re up to during the winter building season.

New Projects

Do you have the time and/or a special talent that you would be willing to share with the club? There is lots of hobby expertise in our club that we should be sharing with each other. Let’s share the wealth of knowledge and promote the hobby with others. A lot of times, people are willing to volunteer except for a fear that they will be left hanging on their own with a responsibility or assignment. However, the new BOD is committed to providing the necessary support, assistance, follow-up and encouragement to those who volunteer to help the club.

In addition to the ongoing work that needs to be done to maintain an active club that is responsive to its membership, there are a number of new projects that the Board would like to initiate. All we need is some manpower (or womanpower!) willing to assist with some of the projects. If you have an interest in any of the following, give Mike R or any board member a shout.

  • Club News Coordinator
  • Club Photographer
  • Club Historian
  • New Pilot Trainers
  • Coordinators for Club events such as Fun Fly’s, Electric Fun Fly’s, Warbird Contest, Combat Event, Club Picnic,
  • Concessions Coordinator or Club Coordinator for IMAC Contest
  • Membership Secretary

Club Dues

This is a reminder that Club dues are due at the January club meeting. Club bylaws require each member provide documentation of current AMA membership in order to receive a club membership card. Yearly dues responsibilities are $60.00, of which $50.00 goes towards membership dues and the other $10.00 towards tickets for the raffle plane to keep or sell. Since the majority of income for club activities comes from membership dues, early payment helps your Board of Directors in budget planning activities for the year. Remember that according to the Club bylaws, members who have not paid their dues by March 31 will be dropped from the membership.
